Fatal House Fire in Huntingtown

By Chief Jonathan Riffe
January 12, 2010

Tuesday January 12, 2010 at 1530 hours, units were dispatched to 300 Sun Park Lane in Huntingtown, MD for the House Fire (608 box). This assignment brought Chief 6A (Montgomery), Chief 6B (Thrasher), Captain 6 (Collins), Safety Officer 6 (McKenny), Engine 62 (Rountree Jr), Squad 6 (Nasti), Tanker 6 (Gaylor) and Ambulance 68 (Lt Grierson). Seconds after dispatch, Safety Officer 6 (in his personal vehicle) arrived on location of a single-story wood-frame house with nothing evident. However, in the front yard was an elderly person advising his wife was trapped inside. Safety Officer 6 attempted entry in the house but do to high heat and heavy smoke, was immediately pushed out.

Engine 62 & Squad 6 arrived on location simultaneously and entered the residence together. Both crews split upon entry in the front door, performing an aggressive primary search and searching for the fire. Within seconds, FF M. Nasti (OIC of Squad 6) located the elderly female in a bathroom. He immediately contacted Command (Chief 6A) and was met in the living room by FF M. Fisher (Engine 62 FF). Both FF's removed the victim outside to awaiting EMS where CPR was performed.

Surprisingly, the fire had burnt itself out and was found smoldering. Engine 62 extinguished the remaining fire while Squad 6's crew vented horizontally. Unfortunately, the victim perished in the fire. Crews from the Huntingtown VFD operated on the scene for 3 hours assisting Fire Investigators.
